Kirk Hammett Releases Cinematic Solo Tune ‘High Plains Drifter’

Metallica guitarist Kirk Hammett has unveiled a solo song titled “Superior Plains Drifter,” the initially flavor of his upcoming debut solo EP, Portals.

You can hear to the tune below.

The cinematic instrumental track starts with thoroughly clean guitar arpeggios and brooding orchestral swells prior to offering way to overdriven chugs, thundering drums and a spectacular string arrangement. Conductor Edwin Outwater, Queens of the Stone Age drummer Jon Theodore and customers of the Los Angeles Philharmonic all contributed to the tune.

“Large Plains Drifter” shares its title with a 1973 Western starring and directed by Clint Eastwood. Hammett described in a assertion that the track “was not intended to be exclusively tunes for that movie, but it was when it was published, I promptly thought it conveyed the same sentiment as the film, so the piece was christened appropriately. The audio for ‘High Plains Drifter’ originally came from a flamenco piece I had created. It was a two-and-a-50 percent-minute piece, and I genuinely appreciated it, but it was 1 of these riffs that would be tricky to combine into Metallica.

“I realized I wanted to do some thing with it, even while it arrived out spontaneously,” Hammett ongoing. “I experienced been sitting outside messing close to with a flamenco acoustic guitar I might just bought, and it flowed out in the instant. I was determined it would have a existence. It would have its minute.”

Hammett will release the 4-song Portals on April 23. It will be out there digitally, on CD and as an distinctive History Keep Working day ocean-blue vinyl edition. The guitarist produced the EP and mixed it with longtime Metallica producer Bob Rock, who worked with the band from 1991’s Black Album through 2003’s St. Anger.

“This tunes was made with what I explain as an Audio-Cinematic tactic,” Hammett said in a statement. “They are soundtracks to the films in your head.”
